3. Sensory organs absorb energy from a physical stimulus in the environment. Sensory receptors convert this energy into neural impulses and send them to the brain.
Topic(3): SLEEP, DREAMS, AND CONSCIOUSNESS
1. Sleep fascinates people because it may be somewhat reminiscent of death: We lie down, we close our eyes and we are dead to the world. Apparently, only a few minutes later, without being aware of any loss of time, we get up again. Sleep is an event that conveys the subjective appearance of not happening at all. We are not aware of having slept. Sleep is a non-activity that seems to steal one-third of our life. Dreams, that are usually part of sleep, can be very unsettling and can even make us question our sanity.
2. Dreaming experience is commonly viewed as qualitatively distinct from waking experience. Dreams are often believed to be characterized by lack of reflection and inability to act deliberately and with intention. However, this view has not been based on equivalent measurements of waking and dreaming state experiences. To achieve equivalence, it is necessary to evaluate waking experience retrospectively, in the same way that dreams are evaluated.

social factors (I've learned it can affect my decisions making especially my perception too)It is tempting to assume that perception and reasoning solely entail physiological and psychological processes. If that be the case, the appropriate methodology for understanding and predicting another's behavior would involve entering that person's reality--metaphorically approaching that individual as an information processing system. This is psychology's imprint on Americans' understanding of the human condition: if one can understand how the world is perceived and experienced by another person, then one can predict that person's behavior.

1.… cross-sectional design. With this method, you get a group of participants who are of different ages and study them at the same time (not literally, but within a two to three month window). You only study them once (rather than multiple times, as with longitudinal research). With this method, you can investigate issues like social maturation and sexuality across the life span.
2. longitudinal research, it's study the same group of participants over a long period of time (typically a minimum of a year, as much as 30 years). This type of research design allows you to examine such things as the effects of day care, divorce, or environmental issues in development – over time.
3.… he allowed himself to be swayed by his conviction that human beings are not born once and for all on the day their mothers give birth to them, but that life obliges them over and over again to give birth to themselves

your receptors
2. Vision is In studying the many
processes of sensation and
perception, the most widely

vision.
3. Gestalt psychology, the whole is different than the sum of its parts. Based upon this belief, Gestalt psychologists developed a set of principles to explain perceptual organization, or how smaller objects are grouped to form larger ones. These principles are often referred to as the "laws of perceptual organization."

1. Consciousness is a variety of aspects of the relationship between the mind and the world with which it interacts.
2. Whether awake or asleep, our consciousness functions as a model of the world constructed by the brain from the best available sources of information.
3. Sleep is a naturally recurring state characterized by reduced or absent consciousness, relatively suspended sensory activity, and inactivity of nearly all voluntary muscles.
TOPIC: MOTIVATION AND EMOTION
1.Psychoanalytic Theory: Sigmund Freud and his five part theory of personality. As part of this theory, he believed that humans have only two basic drives: Eros and Thanatos, or the Life and Death drives.
2.Humanistic Theory: humanistic theory is perhaps the most well know theory of motivation. According to this theory, humans are driven to achieve their maximum potential and will always do so unless obstacles are placed in their way. These obstacles include hunger, thirst, financial problems, safety issues, or anything else that takes our focus away from maximum psychological growth

3.Heredity is the transmission of traits from parents to offsprings.
SENSATION AND PERCEPTION
1.Sensations can be defined as the passive process of bringing information from the outside world into the body and to the brain. The process is passive in the sense that we do not have to be consciously engaging in a "sensing" process.Perception can be defined as the active process of selecting, organizing, and interpreting the information brought to the brain by the senses
2.how we perceive the world is a function of our past experiences, culture, and biological makeup.
3.sensory organs absorb energy from a physical stimulus in the environment.
sensory receptors convert this energy into neural impulses and send them to the brain.
C.Sleep, Dream, and Consciousness
1. States or levels of consciousness include periods of decreased mental functioning as well as mental activity that is outside the realm of normal experience.
2. Our periods of sleeping and waking are regulated by our circadian rhythms.
3. States of consciousness can be altered by meditation, hypnosis, drugs, as well as by certain diseases such as epilepsy.
MOTIVATION AND EMOTION

2.The absolute threshold is the point where something becomes noticeable to our senses. It is the softest sound we can hear or the slightest touch we can feel. Anything less than this goes unnoticed. The absolute threshold is therefore the point at which a stimuli goes from undetectable to detectable to our senses.
