Our very own Ms. Mae-rizza Sotelo, HRM student from the C5 Annex Campus, participated in the 1st National Essay Writing Competition by the Philippine Retirement Authority. I hope that her essay would be chosen in this competition!

This screenshot was an acknowledgement receipt I received from PRA after I sent Ms. Sotelo's essay and other required documents.

I am proud of you, Ms. Sotelo, and all of us must be proud of her as well!

Letter of Request for the Provision of Room for the Rizal Exhibit

19 September 2011

MRS. KATE L. OSORIO
College Registrar/Acting College Director
The Fisher Valley College
Taguig City

Dear Madame:

Warm Christian greetings!

In connection with the 150th celebration of Dr. Jose P. Rizal this year, my classes in Rizal’s Life and Works came up with a proposal to have an exhibit during our three-day organizational activities on September 21-23, 2011. Memorabilia on Rizal’s life and works will be displayed for three days in the main campus.

In line with this, we would like to request for the provision of one (1) classroom for our Rizal Exhibit. All students, staff, and guests are invited to view these memorabilia. Our goal is to inform the TFVC community about the greatness of our first and foremost National Hero by letting them view the pictures, dioramas, and other presentations of important persons, places, and things associated with Rizal. This exhibit is free of charge.

Thank you so much.

Sincerely yours,

MARLON B. RAQUEL
Course Instructor

Deadline of submission for Assignment No. 3 extended

Deadline for the submission of Assignments No. 3 for all subjects was extended until September 24, 2011 (Saturday), 11:59 PM due to cancellation/suspension of classes on the previous weeks, upcoming prefinal examinations, and the organizational week.
To all my students,

You are invited to attend a lecture on September 17, 2011 (Saturday) at UP Diliman from 9:00-12:00. Mong Palatino is the speaker for the said lecture. He is serving his second term in Congress. He was once served the UP Diliman Student Council as the Chairperson.

Shamcey Supsup bagged the 4th place in Miss Universe 2011

 Shamcey Supsup, 3rd Runner-Up, Miss Universe 2011

All UP alumni must be proud of her. Filipinos all over the world must be proud as well for a Filipina beauty who brought prestige and pride to our country.

Shamcey Supsup, a graduate of the University of the Philippines, bagged the 4th place in Miss Universe 2011 beauty pageant held today at Sao Paolo City in Brazil. She was the Philippines' representative to the this popular beauty pageant after winning the title in Binibining Pilipinas 2011.

Judge Vivica A. Fox asked Supsup the question: "Would you change your religious beliefs to marry the person that you love? Why or why not?" The Filipina beauty answered: "If I had to change my religious beliefs, I would not marry the person that I love because the first person I love is God, who created me. I have my faith and my principles, and this is what makes me who I am. And if that person loves me, he should love my God, too."

I think that was an excellent answer. It was just "unfortunate" that she did not make it to win the title of Miss Universe. One of the renowned women in the world today, Opray Winfrey, commented on this issue: "I have reservations with the results. If the only basis is the Q and A portion, after having been trimmed down to 5, Ms. Philippines deserved to win. What made her different from the rest is that she had no seconds to rethink of her answer as she had no interpreter to break the ice. The rest had their interpreters and having breaks on seconds to think about their answers. Hands down, Ms. Philippines answered straight to the point."

Shamcey graduated valedictorian in elementary at Notre Dame of Lagao in General Santos City, salutatorian in Makati City High School, and magna cum laude from the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City. She also topped the Architecture Licensure Examination last July 2010.

Congratulations to Ms. Shamcey Supsup! Manong Oble is so proud of you!

Last Saturday, 12 students who are enrolled in my Economics with LRT class attended the lecture of Dr. Kabamalan at UP Population Institute. I secured a permission from Ms. Marianne Mojar, C5 Administrator and Ms. Kate Osorio, TFVC Acting College Director, prior to attending the said lecture. Students were required to submit a reaction paper. The said lecture was free. In addition, students were given certificates of attendance at the end of the lecture. Details of the lecture discussion are the following:

Speaker: Prof. Maria Midea Kabamalan, Ph.D.
Venue: Conference Room, 3rd Floor, Palma Hall, Population Institute, College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City
Class: Emerging Issues in Population under Dr. Jonathan David Flavier
Topic: Lifestyle, Health Status and Behavior of Young Workers in Call Centers and Other Industries: Metro Manila and Metro Cebu

Background of the Research Study as stated in UPPI-DRDF's website:

This study examines the lifestyles and health of young workers in call centers and how they compare with young workers in other industries. In particular, it looks at how their work and lifestyles affect their economic, social and health (including their reproductive health) situation. A total of 675 respondents from call centers in Metro Manila and Metro Cebu and 241 respondents from non call center establishments in Metro Manila were interviewed.

In general, the results show that there are some striking differences between the two types of young workers while at the same time there are also similarities between them. Among the notable differences is that call center workers generally have higher income and receive more work benefits than their counterparts in other industries. The two groups are similar in that they both tend to have unhealthy diets. Both groups report average sleeping hours much lower than the ideal eight hours but lack of sleep is more common among call center workers. More call center workers currently smoke while the prevalence of drinking is equally high for both groups of workers. Risky sexual behavior (e.g., early sex, unprotected sex, casual sex) is high among the young workers in the study but the levels are slightly higher among call center workers. The difference is more pronounced for sex with the same sex among males. More call center workers than non call center workers rate their health as poor or fair, consider the stress levels at work to be high, and experience health problems associated with work. Awareness and knowledge of HIV prevention and transmission is relatively high in both groups, although very few feel that they are at risk of HIV infection.

This study was made possible through the funding support provided by the Commission on Population.

Few months ago, I posted a poll question in this website regarding the Reproductive Health Bill. Visitors were asked whether or not they approve the passage of the Reproductive Health (RH) Bill. With 75 respondents here are the results of the poll.

An overwhelming 72% of the respondents APPROVED the passage of the bill in Congress.

Twenty-four percent (24%) of the online visitors DID NOT APPROVE such bill.

Four percent (4%) of the respondents DID NOT REALLY CARE about the issue.

Update on RH Bill: President Aquino included the RH Bill as one of the 13 priority bills to be tackled in Congress.

Dr. Flavier is a professor of Population Institute, a physician by profession, and the son of former Senator and DOH Secretary Juan Flavier. The lecture will be conducted at the Conference Room, 3rd Floor, Population Institute, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City on September 3, 2011 (Saturday), 9:00 o’clock in the morning until 12:00 o’clock noon.
